“The Glass Castle: A Memoir” by Jeannette Walls
This book opens with the author in a cab in New York City wondering if she is over-dressed for the holiday party she’s about to attend. She looks out of the cab window and sees her mother, dumpster diving. She asks the cab to take her back home, to Park Avenue.
Now, how could I not finish this as quickly as possible? I couldn’t wait to find out how a woman living on Park Avenue has a mother who is apparently homeless.
When the first memory the author has is of setting herself on fire, at age three, while cooking hot dogs, I knew I had to keep reading. The author’s family is very different, and so is she. This was a wonderful read–it keeps moving and lets you relish your own childhood, unique or ordinary.
