How do you manage the never ending onslaught of information?

In the Mac Power Users podcast 018: Managing The Onslaught, David talked about his RSS reading workflow.

I’ve considered some of his excellent suggestions and for the past few weeks, have been able to feel like I am keeping up with rush.

I know I’m probably fooling myself. It’s not possible to keep up with the flood, but a few tips and it’s possible to catch some of the nuggets as they pour in.

Google Reader stores subscriptions, allows some organizing, and is available anywhere with a browser. The mobile view is also pretty tolerable on the iPhone. I’ve been using Google Reader for a long time and am happy with the interface and accessibility. Following some recommendations, I’m currently trying out the Reeder iPhone app.

Here’s the plan:

  • As time allows, browse through the headlines. Read the short articles if interested, and star the longer articles. Another option instead of staring, send the article to Instapaper.
  • Follow up reading the longer articles when time allows and/or back at the big machine. Once the starred article is read, clear the star. If reading on Instapaper, send it to the archive.

So far, I’m liking the new workflow.
