Roger’s Still Growing
by bestep on 05. Jul, 2010 in Personal
Turns out my African Violets name is Roger. He’s still alive and growing. Frankly, I’m surprised. He’s been in my care now for three weeks, and is still alive! Must be the clean living.
Sidekicks
by bestep on 03. Jul, 2010 in Writing
I learn something new every day. Most folks know the main character is the protagonist, and the bad guy is the antagonist. But who’s the sidekick? Is there a fancy Greek word for the sidekick? Sure enough, there is. He or she is the Deuteragonists. I don’t know how handy that is, but it is [...]
What’s Your Next Read?
by bestep on 02. Jul, 2010 in Books, Reading, Technology
A new site is trying an interesting approach to finding new reading material. Check out YourNextRead. The site generates recommendations in an interesting social/mind map style. I didn’t have much luck finding recommendations, but it’s probably just new. So your mileage may vary. God knows my tastes do Certainly worth checking out and keeping an [...]
The American Working Class
by bestep on 01. Jul, 2010 in Personal
What does the future hold for the American working class? Joel Kotkin, in an article titled ‘The Future Of America’s Working Class‘ discusses the challenges the British working class are facing, and similarities to the American situation. Britain’s present situation should represent a warning about America’s future as well. Of course there have always been [...]

by bestep on 30. Jun, 2010 in Writing
It comes up all the time. Writers write. And it makes sense. Monica Valentinelli offers some great thoughts on the subject over at her blog: No one else can tell you how to be a writer; while advice can help the only thing you absolutely must do if you want to be a writer is [...]
Ecoped – Electric Bikes
by bestep on 29. Jun, 2010 in Technology
The tree-hugger in me is getting all goose-pimply again. Check out the Ecoped CityGo. I know electric drive bikes are not anything new, but these are pretty darn cool looking, and a perfect urban fit. Now I just need an urban that I fit in. Enjoy!
Electric Flight
by bestep on 27. Jun, 2010 in Technology
Interesting article over at The Economist about electric powered flight. The idea of flying electric has lots going for it. An electric motor can deliver a huge amount of torque, or turning force, which is what gives electric cars such rapid acceleration, and is good for turning propellers, too. Electric motors do not need a [...]

The End of the Sticky?
by bestep on 26. Jun, 2010 in Technology
A work friend of mine, that shares my office supply fetish, found this very cool device at Brookstone called the Boogie Board. It’s a simple little pad and stylus that you can draw/write on, then click a button and it clears…ready for more notes. There have been many non-electronic version of this over the years. [...]
